Nicole Herbel, Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing student, has been chosen as a recipient of the Army Nurse Corps Association Scholarship. “I’m truly honored to receive this scholarship from the Army Nurse Corps Association,” said Herbel. “To be recognized for hard work is amazing.”
In order to be considered for the scholarship, one must be a veteran, have a close family member who is a veteran or be married to a veteran. Herbel's husband is a veteran with the U.S Army. When she applied for the scholarship, Herbel also submitted several letters of recommendation and wrote an essay explaining why she chose the field of nursing.
“I want to be the nurse (that) families remember for being patient with them and providing comfort to their loved one in their time of need. It’s about the impact I will leave on each patient I meet, that is why I want to become a nurse.”
Residing sixty miles outside of St. Louis in Rose Bud, Missouri, Herbel is not only a full-time student in the upper division program at Goldfarb, she also is a wife, mother and a farmer ― which is something she learned from her dad and husband.
“Since my father passed away, I have learned to operate lots of machinery in order to be self-sufficient in farming. My husband has taught me more about tractors, the grain truck and the dump truck.”
Depending on the season, Herbel can work an average of 20-30 hours a week farming.
“It’s hard balancing family, school and farming but I have no doubt that it will all pay off,” said Herbel.
After graduation Herbel will continue to farm and hopes to become a pediatric or emergency room nurse.
