Three Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing students, De’Anua Timmons, Abby Nguyen, and Ismet Huremovic, recently dedicated a weekend at Camp Penuel in Ironton, Missouri, to help ensure campgoers had an unforgettable summer. Three Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing students, De’Anua Timmons, Abby Nguyen and Ismet Huremovic, recently dedicated a weekend at Camp Penuel in Ironton, Missouri, to help ensure campgoers had an unforgettable summer.
Timmons, Nguyen and Huremovic, sponsored by Goldfarb’s Student Nursing Association, volunteered their time by helping with meal prep and distribution, break-out groups, swimming, and many other activities.
“I think Camp Penuel is a great experience because, it steps outside of the clinical setting to look at at-risk children in a safe environment,” said Timmons. “The camp requires therapeutic communication, patience, active listening, and assessment of the child’s needs.”
Camp Penuel is a nondenominational, Christian program that has been serving children since 1973. The camp offers opportunities for teenagers to enjoy a week or weekend of food, fun, and fellowship.
“It was the students who volunteered that made this trip a huge success. Our hope for this project was to have an impact on the campers and we achieved just that,” said Timmons.
