Sarah Galvin, a nurse anesthesia student from Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing, recently took a mission trip to Honduras. Galvin traveled with a group of health care providers from across the country that represented Surgical Outreach for Americas (SOFA). Galvin traveled with a group of health care providers from across the country that represented Surgical Outreach for the Americas (SOFA).
“I loved having the opportunity to participate in a surgical mission trip with Surgical Outreach for the America (SOFA) to Honduras,” said Galvin. “The SOFA team was a group of supportive staff, nurses, surgeons and CRNAs from various areas of the country. I was able to work and learn from CRNAs I had worked with before at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, as well as CRNAs across the country.”
The nurse anesthesia program at Goldfarb views participation in mission trips as an educational experience for the nurse anesthesia student, but also as a way to provide service work to those less fortunate.
“Being able to experience the culture first hand and giving back to the community was overwhelming. The impact this group had on this community, and the relationships formed were inspiring. It was a very organized and fun learning experience.” said Galvin.
